What do Treatments for Leukemia or Blood Cancer?

Our thoughts and prayers are with Bu Ani Yudhoyono, the former first lady of Indonesia who is diagnosed with acute leukemia or blood cancer. Thank Lord, she is optimistic about her condition, and she is getting better.

Many years ago, we knew that leukemia was a childhood disease, actually leukemia also is diagnosed in elderly people between 65 to70 year-old. Mikkael Sekeres, MD, a doctor in Hematology and Medical Oncology Department Cleveland Clinic, explained that he had a patient with leukemia in his 60s and undergoes intensive chemotherapy. Sekeres said that this patient had about 60 percent chance of going into discharged, because all signs and symptoms of cancer gone, even the cancer may still be in his body. He also had another patient, and he said, “My 99-year-old patient walked three miles a day before undergoing treatment for leukemia and lived for another year after treatment.”

So, what do treatments for leukemia or blood cancer? There are several factors that will determine the treatment regimen, such as: the type of leukemia. subtype, phase, category and/or stage, cytogenetic analysis results, symptoms, overall health, WBC count, the rate of disease progression, infection in the bloodstream, and the effect treatments.

A patient should discuss with oncologist about both the options of treatments and the effects into quality of life. There are some treatments, and a patients might be recommended one or more (lls.org): Watch and wait, no treatment until doctor can see symptoms appear or change. Chemotherapy, chemotherapy drugs and/or anti-cancer agent drugs. Radiation, using x-ray. Immunotherapy, exploit immune system to fight cancer. Blood transfusion, blood from donor to replace red blood, platelets, and other components. Cancer vaccines, to treat cancer and reduce its potential to grow. Stem cell transplantation, stem cells from donor (normally from sister or brother) transfuse to patient's marrow and then new cells will grow.

Proud of Bu Ani Yudhoyono, she realizes that a person diagnosed with acute leukemia can be treated and still has a good quality of life. Live longer, Bu Ani. We love you.

  3. A patient with leukemia has to undergo intensive chemotherapy. Can this therapy really kill the cancer cells or it just relieves the signs and symptoms?
